About Wendy Binks

Wendy produces funtional hand made terracotta pottery. Each piece is handpainted with brightly coloured, beautiful and quirky Australian animals. Wendy is well known for her "Emu with Attitude"!

Wendy grew up on a dairy farm in beautiful town of Denmark, Southern Western Australia and developed a keen interest in animals and art from an early age.
After her graduation with a BA in Art & Design from Curtin University in 1982, (majoring in ceramics) Wendy based her business, "Stunned Emu Designs" in Fremantle, Western Australia. Initially she produced handmade and handpainted pottery combining her interest in Australian wildlife with her art. She became well known for her brightly coloured terracotta pieces and quirky characters particulary her trademark "Emu with attitude". Since opening her shop in the famous Fremantle Markets 10 years ago, Wendy has increased her range of products to include cards, magnets, prints, paintings and other gift items. Early in 2010, Wendy opened her own Gallery in South Terrace, Fremantle, which has allowed her to extend her range even further.
Her humorous designs are particularly popular with children which prompted Wendy to write her first children's book, with an emu as the main character. Wendy wrote, illustrated and self published "Where's Stripey?" in 2005 winning 2 awards, one being the prestigious WA Premier's Award, Children's section. Stripey as a character was so popular that as well as a Stripey plush toy, another book, "Scrambled Egg" was produced in 2007 followed by an activity book in 2009. The third Stripey book will be published in 2010.
Wendy is an avid outdoor person, having at some time or another been involved in rock climbing, caving, scuba diving, cave diving, trekking and kayaking. Wendy recently returned from an 8 week, 650km solo wilderness walk across the Australian Alps and "Scrambled Egg" was largely written while doing a 3 week solo trek on the Larapinta Trail near Alice Springs.
Wendy has also been involved in some conservation work with the endangered Western Ground Parrot, spending time in Esperance and Albany (Southern W.A) surveying and monitoring with the Department of Environment and Conservation. western-ground-parrot.org.au
